Jamaican Ken Boothe grew up in the midst of a culture damaged by racial inequity, colonialism and poverty during the 60’s and 70’s. On this 1973 cover he takes Syl Johnson’s original “Is It Because I’m Black” up to the righteous anger. Boothe cut the running time of the song in half. Propelled by the persistent chank of the guitar and a rumbling bass, he delivers an impressive vocal performance with an explosion of emotion.
